The old format was Microsoft Windows Video or “WMV”  The new format is “MP4H.264 AVC.

Consequences of the change

The H.264 file format is less compact than WMV.  The files will be larger and will require faster internet speeds to watch the video.

Size of one minute video. Sermons normally range from 25 to 50 minutes.

  • WMV, old format 1,864 KB
  • MP4, new format 5,635 KB ( 320p )
  • MP4, original camera quality 61,165 KB ( 480 )

COMPATIBILITY

H.264 video is supported on most operating systems, devices and browsers.  WMV was supported as a browser plug-in.  Recent test showed that only Windows Internet Explorer supported WMV video by default.  Modern web browsers have built in support for H.264 video using the HTML 5 Video tag.

Old computers with old browsers that do not support HTML 5 will not play the videos.
